Where to live in Saigon will depend on your place of work, the school if you have kids or your lifestyle (Some areas have more restaurants, activities for the families than others). The main reason to be careful about the location is that the road traffic is now very bad here. Luckily, there are now plenty of modern buildings around HCMC where you can rent an apartment.
Thao Dien in District 2 (now part of Thu Duc city) has a lot of co-working space and cozy cafes, making it a popular neighborhood for digital nomads. Many young business professionals with families also prefer to stay there because it’s a stylish area with many trendy apartments.
If you prefer to stay in a business and hi-end shopping area, you can check out District 1, Binh Thanh and District 4. The area offers fine dining restaurants, shopping streets, business centers, and so on. But the price tag of this area is among the highest in Saigon.
District 7 (Phu My Hung) is also great if you like larde green spaces. Roads are better organized but the traffic going to District 1 can be heavy.

Not so long ago, most expats would find themselves perfectly happy with some apartments in old colonial buildings. Really cool but they often had poor maintenance and curfews. The search can be actually really fast, for some it takes just a few hours. You may want to book a short term accommodation for a few days.
Renting an unfurnished apartment: Assuming that your have already your work contract, all the paper work will be easy. The lease together with your work permit will be necessary for you to have a your furniture delivered.
Or a fully furnished condo: You will see on our website that we have made it easy to search for furnished apartment. While most owner consider it an investment and furnish their apartment basically, you will also be glad to see that some are really well equipped.
When renting in Saigon, expect to pay a deposit equivalent to 2 months rent and rental payment monthly.
As you will be in competition with other people also looking to for an apartment, consider preparing a small booking deposit (1/3 of the rent you are prepared to pay). That will make the search more efficient as the best apartments can get rented very fast.
You will need to present your passport and a visa so the apartment owner can register you when you move in.

Most of our lease are 1 year minimum. Also, in Vietnam most real estate agents are paid if they can provide a long term contract.
Some short term accommodation is possible via serviced apartments if you just need to rent for a few weeks only.
You won’t have to pay untill the end of the lease but usually there is a penalty over the deposit with a notice period of 1 month or 2. By the same token, the apartment owner will have to give you a proper notice, return the deposit and compensate you in the same amount if for example he/she sells the apartment.

Most 1 or 2 bedrooms apartments are usually furnished. Some are really cozy with familiar designs you could find from home. There is also a very active second hand market on Facebook or plenty of furniture shops if you plan to decor your own place.
In any case, most apartment are equipped with at least appliances and curtains.
