Chào bạn! (Hello!)
My name is Ha, and I’m the founder of The Urban Hanoi. More importantly, I’m a Hanoian, born and raised. This city is my home, and I believe it’s one of the most magical places on earth. It can also be a beautiful, chaotic, and absolutely wonderful puzzle for a first-time visitor.
I’ve spent years sharing my love for this city with travelers, and I’ve learned what truly makes a trip special. It’s not just about seeing the sights; it’s about feeling the city’s pulse. So, I want to personally share a few of my favorite local tips to help you have an amazing time.
Think of me as your first friend in
1. Let’s Talk About the Weather (It Really Matters!)
The first question I always get is, “When should I come?” My honest answer is that Hanoi is beautiful year-round, but if you want the most comfortable experience, aim for Spring (March-April) or Autumn (September-November). The air is crisp, the sun is gentle, and the city is just begging to be explored on foot. Winter has a misty, romantic charm perfect for cozying up in cafes, while summer is hot but full of life (and fewer crowds!).
2. Your Best Friends are Your Feet (and an App!)
The magic of Hanoi is in the details, and you’ll only find them by walking. Your own two feet are your best friends here, especially in the Old Quarter. Just let yourself wander. For longer distances, please don’t hail a random taxi. Download the Grab app on your phone. It’s our version of Uber, it’s safe, and you’ll see the price upfront. It’s what all the locals use.
3. Find the City’s Soul in the Old Quarter & Hoan Kiem Lake
These two places are the heart of my city. The joy of the Old Quarter is in getting wonderfully lost. Don’t worry about a map at first; just follow the scent of something delicious or the sound of something interesting. This is where you’ll find the real Hanoi.
Then, find your way to Hoan Kiem Lake. It’s our green lung, our meeting point. I love walking around it in the early morning, watching the city wake up. Be sure to cross the beautiful red bridge—it feels like you’re stepping into another world.
4. Take a Moment for History
Hanoi has a thousand-year-old story to tell. To really understand it, I always recommend visiting the Temple of Literature. It was our first university, and it’s a truly peaceful oasis. For a more recent and powerful look into our past, the Hoa Lo Prison Relic is an unforgettable experience.
5. Please, Promise Me You’ll Eat Everything!
Hanoi’s street food is our pride and joy. My one rule for you: be brave! If you see a little plastic stool on the sidewalk and it’s crowded with locals, you must sit down and try whatever they’re serving. That’s where you’ll find the best food, I promise. Don’t leave without trying a proper bowl of Phở for breakfast and a classic Banh Mi for a snack.
6. Two Things You Can ONLY Do in Hanoi
There are two experiences that are pure Hanoi magic. First, you have to see Train Street. There is nothing like the feeling of a huge train rumbling past, just inches away. Second, go to a Water Puppet Show. It’s a traditional art form that is so unique and charming—it always makes me smile.
7. When You’re Ready to Escape the City
Hanoi is the perfect launchpad for exploring the incredible nature of Northern Vietnam. The majestic beauty of Halong Bay and the serene, otherworldly landscapes of Ninh Binh are easy to visit from here. Planning these trips can be confusing, and this is something I love helping my guests with—connecting them with trusted guides for an amazing and stress-free adventure.
8. A Few Little Secrets from a Local
-
Always Carry Cash: Many of the best food stalls and little shops only accept Vietnamese Dong (VND).
-
Drink Bottled Water: Your stomach will thank you!
-
Smile! Hanoians can seem busy, but a warm smile will always be returned.
9. And My Most Important Tip… Choose a Home, Not Just a Room.
This might be the most important piece of advice I can give you. Where you stay will completely shape your trip. It’s your sanctuary after a long day of exploring, and it should feel like a part of the city.
This is why I started The Urban Hanoi. I was a traveler myself, and I have a deep passion for interior design. I wanted to create spaces that I would want to live in—beautiful, comfortable apartments that feel both modern and deeply connected to their neighborhood.
Whether you want the historic energy of the Old Quarter, the chic and calm vibe of West Lake, or the unforgettable experience of Train Street, I’ve designed a space that I hope will feel like your own personal home in my city.
I hope these tips help you fall in love with Hanoi just as much as I have.
Warmly,
Ha
