An Phu (Thao Dien) is THE expat residential area in Saigon where you should find houses and villas for rent, international schools, restaurants... Located just about 20 min from downtown, it is a good place to live if you are looking for quietness. Most houses have a swimming pool and garden. Expats enjoy this area because it is like a village where your family can hve a rich social life and go around safely. Also it provides a wide range of services and products that will make you feel comfortable like home. For the French community, An phu / Thao Dien has become a priviledged place since the new French School (Ecole Francaise Colette) has moved to district 9.

 An Phu is more a place where people look for villas or houses than apartments.

The standard house with a garden and a swimming pool costs around $4,000 US a month with a minimum of $3,000 US. The most expensive houses cost around $8,000 US / month.

For the apartments, you can expect to have a nice 3 bedroom apartment for $1,600 US to $3,500 US depending of the surface, the location, the facilities (swimming pool/gym or not) and its equipment.

There are many activities in An Phu: you can find there tennis courts, leisure centres (yoga, gym...), bike and roller playgrounds, Rock climbing, fitness clubs...

Feeling lazy to go downtown for dinner? There are a few good western restaurants in Thao Dien such as Thao Dien Village, the new and excellent La Plancha french restaurant, The Mekong Merchant, Cafe Evita, The Deck and last but not least Les 3 gourmands restaurant. If you prefer to eat local, the Quan 13 restaurant is also an excellent choice. 

District 2 is splitted into 3 main expat areas: Thao Dien ward, An Phu ward and An Khanh ward.

Thao Dien is the most popular area as the international schools (British International School " BIS ", Montessori school, ACG International School and International School of Ho Chi Minh City " ISHCM" ) are there.  The main area is around the An Phu supermarket.

This area has 7 main compounds:  BP compound, FIDICO compound,  Phu Nhuan compound, Bao Tien compound, SG Riverside compound, Thao Dien I & II

Beware:

Security: If you rent a house in An Phu, you should know that your house could be visited if it is in an isolated area. There has been very few cases of violence reported. If it happens, it will be during the night or the holidays. It doesn't happen often but we think it is better to use the service of a guard that would stay the night. Most houses are equipped with a dedicated space for a guard outside the house.  If you stay in a compound, the risk will be lower.

Flood: Although less of a problem since the road upgrades, some parts of Thao Dien are still often floody, especially during "winter". The water can reach 40 cm high in the street. If most houses are protected/elevated, the access can be difficult by bike and by car. The flood in An Phu comes with the tides. So you will notice it more during winter and during the day, in the morning and by the end of the afternoon.
