Chantal - French PDF Print E-mail
We have met with Chantal in Ho Chi Minh city, on june 29, 2004. She explains us how she keeps herself healthy.

How did you end up in Vietnam?
I came with my husband in July 2003. He works for a Vietnamese company.

When we first arrived in Saigon, we immediately realized how hectic this city is. Each street was as interesting and lively as the next. It was a whole another world. People are nice and ask a lot of questions. Driving motorbikes was a little bit nerve wrecking in the beginning but we got used to it quickly. That's why I often take a xe om (moto-taxi). This way, I can watch life on the streets.

Why do you do Tai Chi?
I do Tai Chi because it helps me gain more flexibility (though I still have a lot of work to do!!!). It takes time and I have to practice regularly at home. It also requires focusing your mind on every single movement. Then you become aware of your body and feel more balanced. I noticed that awareness with people who do Tai Chi for many years. So I recommend other Expats to do some Tai Chi, because it will make you feel good physically and mentally. It's also a good way to socialize. I find it interesting.

How are the classes?
I do Tai Chi every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 7.00 AM. Because I arrive a little bit later than with other students I don't know everyone in the club (Classes starts at 6.00 AM).  I don't speak Vietnamese, but communication with people has been very nice, especially with the assistants who teaches me the different movements for stretching. Afterwards, the teacher gives me a private lesson for the last 45 min.

What are your favorite places in Saigon?
The 15 May school, where I teach embroidery for girls from 9 to 14 years old
My neighborhood   2 Thang 3  (market, ....)
The Reunification Palace park
The Notre-dame Cathedral

What do you recommend future Expats coming to Vietnam?
To live in a busy and lively neighborhood where you can experience the everyday culture  and traditions.
To practice a martial art.
To take Vietnamese classes (prononciation is not easy but after 3 years one can be fluent)
To volunteer in a school for disadvantaged people. That's an excellent experience that can teach you a lot.
